Infinitive phrases act as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. What are infinitive phrases? An infinitive phrase starts with an infinitive and ends with other words. Correction: I was so annoyed with my brother, eating the entire bowl of ice cream. Correction: Lost in the woods, the dog could not find its owner.Participle phrases need to modify a noun, and they need to be a part of an independent clause. All other writers should avoid sentence fragments in their writing. Only very, very experienced writers may use fragments for stylistic purposes. Why are sentence fragments bad? Sentence fragments should be avoided at all costs. This fragment has a noun, “we,” and a verb, “leave,” but it isn’t a complete sentence.This fragment does not have a subject or a verb.Sentence fragments lack one or both of these elements, both of which are required to form an independent clause. In order to be a grammatically correct complete sentence, a sentence needs a subject (explicit or implied) and a verb. Since it isn’t a complete sentence, it must be reworked to be grammatically correct. In other words, it is only part of a sentence, not a complete one. What is a Sentence Fragment?Ī sentence fragment is exactly as it sounds: a “fragment” of a sentence. This useful information can be used with forming small instructional groups or end of year review.Sentence fragment definition: A sentence fragment is a type of incomplete sentence that lacks the necessary grammatical elements to make an independent clause. Once you think your students had enough practice, give them an independent assessment and track their progress. Tell them to underline the subject and circle the predicate in each sentence like the previous lesson to assure they do not have fragments in their paragraph! 7. Give them a topic or prompt to write about in their writing notebooks. Students should now apply their knowledge by writing in complete sentences. For distance learning, I like self-check practices. Worksheets and task cards work well in the classroom, homeschool and centers. Either provide fragments for students to put into complete sentences or provide fragments and complete sentences and have students identify them. Provide some sort of independent practice to see if each student understands fragments and complete sentences. Share some of the student-made fragments and corrections with the class. Their shoulder partner then makes them complete sentences! When students complete this task, they should share their samples with a small group or the whole group. Have students practice correcting fragments by creating 5 fragments and exchanging it with a shoulder partner. Research supports using interactive note-taking through studies on multiple intelligence, note-taking, and the brain! Here are a few videos about SETTING UP INTERACTIVE WRITING NOTEBOOKS. Use INTERACTIVE WRITING NOTEBOOKS or interactive digital notes. Students should take notes and write examples. This will be a great reference to remind students of the skill in the future. To help students understand the meaning of a fragment, take notes in a writing notebook. Make it complete: A lawn service came to trim our bushes. Is the incomplete sentence missing a predicate? A lawn service. Make it complete: My dad was shopping for a car. Is the incomplete sentence missing a subject? Shopping for a car. A FRAGMENT is a group of words missing a subject or predicate. As a whole group, we review yesterday’s COMPLETE SENTENCES lesson and then discuss the meaning of fragments using the following anchor chart. I like to show an image for my visual learners so I use a broken heart for fragments! Make the heart complete with a complete sentence. Read on to learn how to teach students to correct FRAGMENTS. Are your students writing in fragments? Often times students will write an incomplete sentence and it will cause confusion to the reader and disrupt the flow of the paragraph.
